Hukkuneet—Drowned (2017) is a visceral, atmospheric work that captures the intersection of the ethereal and the decaying. It presents a world defined by rising silhouettes and a heavy, transformative atmosphere, inviting the viewer into a space of deep contemplation. The Finnish title Hukkuneet carries a poetic melancholy. It suggests a narrative of what remains after the water rises—a study in endurance and the quiet, gilded beauty of things lost to the depths.
This is not a passive piece of decor; it is an atmospheric anchor. Its dark, grounded base provides a sophisticated foundation for a modern interior, while the luminous upper third draws the eye upward, adding a sense of height and mystery to a room. Hukkuneet appeals to those who find beauty in the weathered, the ancient, and the unseen. It is a conversation starter that doesn't reveal all its secrets at once, rewarding repeated viewing with new details in its layered "sediment."
Painted on a 4 mm plexiglass using acrylic colors, light molding paste and high solid gel. Finished with varnish that deepens the colours and protects the surface of the painting. The signature SM is found on the bottom right. Ready to be put on the wall, doesn’t need framing. Two-point attachment recommended, also compatible with one.
Though the artist has since moved beyond the name Mansala, the signature remains—a permanent mark in an ever-changing world. It reminds us that while life is fluid, art is enduring.
